About Me

counseling to get past a great loss

Sometimes things can get to be more than you can handle. I know this from my own personal experience. I suffered a great loss and after a year of trying to cope with that loss on my own, I knew that it was time for me to reach out for some help. I was missing work, didn't want to do much of anything and just didn't feel like myself. I started seeing a counselor each week, and it has helped. If you are struggling to recover after a loss, this blog may be able to help you find the help you need to get past it.

Are You A Gay Man And Need Therapy? Benefits Of Choosing A Gay Therapist

by Jessica Mason

Being a gay man can be stressful for some men especially if their family is having a hard time understanding or dealing with it. Being gay can also bring out a lot of hatred in people that are against this style of life. All of this can lead to mental problems for you. To help you feel better you should see a therapist.

Below are some benefits of choosing a gay male therapist for yourself.

Has a Better Understanding

All therapists can help you, but a gay therapist already understands what you are going through. They may have gone through or are going through things that you are. This allows them to know the best way to treat you.

The therapist will know the questions to ask you if you are having problems with the therapy. It will take time for you to open up to someone. Knowing the person you are talking to is gay and a man may help you feel much more relaxed after a few visits.

Knows the Best Treatment Options

If you are feeling depressed, the gay therapist may use talk therapy. This is simply talking with the therapist at each visit and telling them how you are feeling, things that happen to you, etc. Sometimes talking things out brings out feelings that you did not realize were there. The therapist can give you tips to deal with things. For example, if your family is having a hard time with this, the therapist may suggest you sit down with them in a neutral setting to talk about it.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is another type of therapy your therapist may choose. This is only if they are trained to do this type of therapy, however. CBT therapy helps you learn ways you are thinking that affect your mental health. The therapist then helps you learn of other ways to cope with your feelings. This changes your thinking patterns to help you feel better. CBT therapy teaches you to deal with problems that will come up throughout the day. For example, you will be taught to deal with people giving you problems.

Licensed therapists are not able to prescribe medication. If your therapist determines that you need medication, such as for depression, they may suggest that you also see a psychiatrist along with seeing them for therapy.

Talk with the gay therapist to learn much more about how they can help you.
