counseling to get past a great loss

Sometimes things can get to be more than you can handle. I know this from my own personal experience. I suffered a great loss and after a year of trying to cope with that loss on my own, I knew that it was time for me to reach out for some help. I was missing work, didn't want to do much of anything and just didn't feel like myself. I started seeing a counselor each week, and it has helped. If you are struggling to recover after a loss, this blog may be able to help you find the help you need to get past it.

How Adult Counseling Differs From Child And Teen Counseling

by Jessica Mason

There is no age at which an individual may no longer need counseling. If you have been to counseling as a child or a teen, you might be familiar with the process. If you decide that you need adult counseling services as an adult, you might wonder if the services will be different now that you're older. Your life stage will affect the type of counseling that you need to receive.

Your Brain is More Developed

Adolescents have special needs that adults don't have when it comes to counseling. If you are an adult, your brain and body are more developed. Therefore, when you are trying to overcome bad behaviors, your counselor might focus more on covering the upsides and downsides of your lifestyle choices, which is something less commonly done with children and teens.

You're More Independent

While family is important for both adults and children, it is especially important for children because they depend on their family for financial support and don't have the option to leave the home under most circumstances.

You Have a Longer Attention Span

When you were a child, other methods might have been used because the idea of sitting and talking would be too boring for you. However, now that you are older, you might be more willing to talk about your past. Talking about the past is also more relevant as an adult since you have more of a history.

In the past, you were more likely to do fun activities when you went into counseling, such as tossing water balloons. This is less common as an adult because you are expected to have a longer attention span.

There are Different Treatments Available

The most common treatments used for adult patients are talk therapy, medications, and group therapy. Group counseling is common for adults because it helps them to feel less isolated. You'll feel comforted to know that other individuals are also struggling with the same issues.

There are several unique problems that adults face that children and teenagers do not face. For example, if you are in a marriage, you might need marriage counseling to overcome strife in your relationship or anxiety that you might be experiencing. You might also be experiencing work-related anxiety that prevents you from performing your job properly. You may need to make lifestyle changes to better cope with anger and anxiety that result from daily life struggles.
